Maldives Industrial gets FoS nod for yellowfin

Maldives Industrial Fisheries Co. has received Friend of the Sea certification for its hand line yellowfin tuna fleet.

The company operates in the Western Indian Ocean, and may now use the Friend of the Sea eco-label on its yellowfin tuna.

“Friend of the Sea audit requirements are very strict so we are proud to have obtained the certification,” said Adley Ismail, CEO of MIFCO. “We will continue to rely on Friend of the Sea to increase the number of certified vessels.”

According to Friend of the Sea, the yellowfin stocks the company fishes are not overexploited, and the company does not operate in any protected areas or too close to shore. The company also has a traceability system that ensures chain of custody.
