The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has officially published the certificate that lists all Alaska salmon suppliers able to sell MSC-certified salmon this year.
Unveiled late last month, the certificate lists the 31 companies that can now supply sockeye, chinook, coho, pink and chum salmon with the MSC blue ecolabel in 2016. However, just 11 of those companies – the entities that transferred over from the certificate’s former client holder, the Alaska Salmon Processors Association (ASPA) – are allowed to sell fish from last year’s inventories with the MSC distinction, noted the certification body.
Among the suppliers who can sell salmon from 2015 as MSC-certified are: 10th & M Seafoods; Copper River Seafoods; Extreme Seafoods; Hoonah Cold Storage; Double E Foods; Silver Bay
The certificate comes after a long period of negotiating between ASPA and the new client certificate holder, Pacific Seafood Processors Association (PSPA). The issuance of the certificate - which runs until 18 November 2018 - marks the ‘best possible outcome’ for the industry, according to MSC.
“MSC is delighted that ASPA and PSPA have reached an agreement to share the current MSC certificate for the Alaska salmon fishery. This industrywide and inclusive solution is the best possible outcome and will offer greater efficiencies and market opportunities for all parties engaged in this iconic fishery,” MSC’s Jon Corsiglia told SeafoodSource.
