NOAA Fisheries invested USD 7 million in Pacific Islands projects

NOAA Fisheries invested USD 7 million (EUR 6.8 million) in grants and agreements through its Pacific Islands Regional Office over the course of 2024, funding wildlife conservation, regulatory operations, and fishery improvement efforts.

The spending was split across 14 U.S. and international organizations working in the Pacific Islands region, including in American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Guam, and Hawaii.

Most of the funding – USD 4.7 million (EUR 4.6 million) – was allocated to the Western Pacific Fishery Management Council through a cooperative agreement to conduct its annual operations and reviews. NOAA Fisheries also provided the council USD 1.1 million (EUR 1 million) for its Sustainable Fisheries Fund, which provided funding for projects in American Samoa and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Among the major programs highlighted by NOAA Fisheries Pacific Islands Regional Office was USD 112,950 (EUR 109,749) to FLOAT Partners to improve coral reef management under the Pacific Islands Marine Protected Areas Community Program and USD 10,000 (EUR 9,716) for the Marine Education and Training Program, and USD 646,671 (EUR 628,369) for the Hawaiʻi Marine Wildlife Response, Outreach, and Population Monitoring Program.

NOAA Fisheries also provided USD 443,907 (EUR 431,343) to partners working on the Marine Turtle Management and Conservation Program, including The Nature Conservancy, the World Wildlife Fun, the Sea Turtle Association of Japan, and the Large Marine Vertebrates Research Institute Philippines.
