Online seafood retailer streamlines business

An online seafood retailer is switching its business model to eliminate distributors, in order to improve the connection between customer and source, and to save money.

Online dealer ilovebluesea.com has made a reputation for itself selling sustainable seafood through an Internet portal from San Francisco, where the company is based. Now, the company said in a release that its new approach will make things simpler — and cheaper — for everyone involved.

“Retail seafood is typically 30 days old, but using technology we are empowering consumers to transact directly with fishermen — often getting it 24-48 hours out of the water,” said CEO Martin Reed. “Not to mention, the fishermen is able to earn two to three times more money than selling through typical distribution channels.”

The new model allows the company to interact more directly with the consumer, further driving home the company’s mission of maintaining a connection with where seafood comes from, both for personal and a food safety benefit.

“With the prevalence of mislabeled seafood in the news recently, along with the disturbing statistic that 90 percent of seafood consumed in the United States is imported from foreign countries, i love blue sea provides consumers a way to get fresh, honest seafood while supporting fishermen around the country,” the company said in its release.
