Overfishing whistleblower website goes Dutch

The Fishyleaks website, launched in July by NGO Our Fish with the aim of providing a confidential and anonymous way for people to report what they believe to be improper, unethical, or illegal fishing practices, is now available in a Dutch-language version, with more languages planned for the future.

"With Fishyleaks we wanted to create a platform for those who want to share information in a secure way," said Frederieke Vlek, campaign coordinator for Our Fish in the Netherlands. "That was necessary, because Our Fish regularly receives anonymous tips about abuses at sea, but cannot take any further steps due to a lack of concrete evidence.”

Announcing the new language version, Our Fish said that while the European Union landing obligation has now been introduced in its entirety, these laws are useless if they are not properly observed or enforced at sea.

"This is where Fishyleaks can contribute: concrete evidence of wrongdoing helps spark the discussion about the necessity of good monitoring at sea," Vlek said.
