Spanish company to partner with SFP

Spanish seafood processor Lumar Seafood International has announced a new partnership with nonprofit Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) to help the company improve the sustainability of its seafood.

Lumar, based in Galicia, produces value-added seafood and ready-to-eat meals. The company plans to work with SFP to assess all of its seafood sources, and create projects to improve the company’s environmental sustainability.

“After having participated with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership in some responsible fishing and sustainability forums we feel quite comfortable and confident that this is a solid partnership that will continue to improve Lumar’s commitment to responsible and ethical sourcing at the highest level,” said Alberto Romero Bermo, Lumar’s director of fisheries and sustainability.

SFP is a global organization that consults primarily with the retail industry on sustainable seafood sourcing practices. SFP’s Pedro Ferreiro said the company is looking forward to the Lumar partnership.

“We are very excited in developing this approach in Spain with a company like Lumar,” he said. “Its international fishing knowledge and background together with big concerns about ecological sustainability of fisheries will allow both ourselves and Lumar to engage the whole supply chain in delivering real improvements.”
