U.S. retailer won’t sell Ross Sea fish

U.S. supermarket chain Harris Teeter has vowed not to buy or sell seafood harvested from Antarctica’s Ross Sea, joining Wegmans and Safeway in making the “Ross Sea Pledge,” according to Greenpeace New Zealand.

Harris Teeter — which operates more than 200 stores in eight Southern states — confirmed the pledge on its website, adding that it will encourage Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) member nations to designate the entire Ross Sea as a marine protected area.

“The announcement by Harris Teeter shows there is a growing awareness by retailers that the Ross Sea should be protected as no-go area,” said Greenpeace New Zealand Oceans Campaigner Karli Thomas.
