Charlie the Tuna gets pumped

StarKist Co. is targeting fitness-minded consumers at an event in Columbus, Ohio, that’s expected to draw more than 175,000 people from about 40 nations.

The canned-tuna giant is a national sponsor and first-time participant in the 2011 Arnold Sports Festival that opens on Thursday. The four-day event, which is billed as the nation’s largest multi-sport event, was founded by fitness guru and former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“Reaching out to this audience of fitness enthusiasts is a tremendous opportunity for StarKist — our products provide the ultimate protein source, without sacrificing on flavor,” said Jennifer Albert, StarKist’s director of marketing. “And with our portable Flavor Fresh Pouch, you can have a delicious, protein-packed snack in between workouts or at mealtime.”

At the event, StarKist will give away product samples and coupons and hold trivia contests with prizes. The company’s iconic mascot, Charlie the Tuna, will also be in attendance.

Earlier this week, StarKist named In-Soo Cho, former president of Pizza Hut Korea, as its president and CEO.
