Import Safety Summit Draws HHS, Industry Groups

The National Fisheries Institute has joined 11 other trade associations in sponsoring the first-ever Import Safety Summit on July 9 in Washington, D.C., the McLean, Va., group announced yesterday.

Top industry executives and Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Leavitt will attend.

"This is an opportunity for producers, processors, restaurants and retailers to get together and share strategies and practices that are working to ensure the continued safety of imported products," says NFI President John Connelly.

The group of industry leaders will review successful supplier-management practices and discuss ways to strengthen public-private partnerships with a focus on import safety.

Co-sponsors of the summit include the American National Standards Institute, Biotechnology Industry Organization, Consumer Healthcare Products Association, Food Marketing Institute, Generic Pharmaceutical Association, Grocery Manufacturers Association, Healthcare Distribution Management Association, National Restaurant Association, Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, Retail Industry Leaders Association and Toy Industry Association.
