Seafood shop closed over googly eyes stuck onto fish

The government of Kuwait shut down an unnamed fish market after it was discovered that the store owner was sticking plastic googly eyes onto old fish to help them appear fresher.

The store’s owner wanted to hide the fact that the fish was several days old, according to local newspaper al-Bayan, Newsweek reported.

A customer uploaded a video to YouTube showing how the fake plastic eyes came off the fish when she washed it, Newsweek reported, and the video has become a viral sensation over the weekend.

Some in the seafood industry are using the situation to their advantage.

“That is why we are happy to have #montereyfish procure the best seafood. We'll save the googly eyes for fun,” tweeted Berkeley, California, restaurant Picante Berkeley, referring to Monterey Fish Market, which has locations in Berkeley and San Francisco.
