3. Gen Z diners are nothing if not technologically savvy. For restaurateurs there’s no magic bullet or ‘gotta have app’ that will suddenly attract this generation, warns Orr. “But you have to be savvy and understand all the current technology trends. You need an online and social presence in your restaurant that reflects who you are as a brand and that lets them know you ‘get’ the platforms you’re engaging on. And you have to be creative in delivering content that will pull them in and engage them.” Rapp cautions restaurateurs on the perils of iPad menus that don’t reflect a restaurant’s brand. “We’ll look back on these menus one day and laugh,” he says. “Today’s iPad menus devalue restaurant brands by reducing their contents to little boxes that all look alike. Restaurateurs need to know that menus are part of their brand and therefore need to have a great look and feel to them so that they build the brand.”
