Asda’s £2 wild salmon triggers price war

For generations, wild salmon has been a luxury which only the wealthiest could put on their tables.

But it is now at the centre of a supermarket price war with the arrival of whole frozen wild Alaskan salmon for only GBP 2.

The record low price charged by Asda is expected to trigger its rivals, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, to launch their own deals.

The GB2 price tag for the 840-gram fish works out at GBP 2.38 per kilogram, and has turned what many view as a rare treat into an everyday commodity food such as chicken or baked beans.

Food industry experts question whether it can be possible to deliver a salmon to a British shopper for such a low price while paying a fair price to the fishermen involved.
