Chicken of the Sea unveils flavored salmon

United States-based seafood company Chicken of the Sea has unveiled three new flavored salmon pouch products.

The company, a subsidiary of Thai Union Group, announced the products, each featuring wild pink salmon in a 2.5-ounce pouch, will come in lemon pepper, barbecue and sweet and spicy flavors.

Chicken of the Sea is best known for its canned and pouched tuna products, but Erin Mrozek, the company’s director of marketing, noted the company began selling skinless and boneless salmon back in 1984. The new products, Mrozek said, will build on success with similar flavored tuna products.

“Flavored tuna is currently a USD 40 million category that is expanding at double-digit rates and driving overall tuna growth,” said Mrozek. “We expect Flavored Salmon Pouches to do the same for the pouched salmon category by attracting new consumers and offering new usage occasions.”

The pouches, marketed as a “lunch alternative,” are available now in the United States in Walmart stores, with plans to roll them out into other national retailers in the spring of 2015. The company is considering other flavors to be released in the future.
