French sushi chain launches iPhone app

Targeting modern-day, health-conscious sushi consumers, Planet Sushi has launched a free iPhone application that lists the French chain’s more than 180 menu items, with photos and prices to help customers make decisions before dining at the fast-food spot.

The Planet Sushi app offers a choice of menus depending on customers’ personal dietary needs, whether they’re athletic, pregnant, elderly, young or a vegetarian.

With EUR 31.5 million in turnover in 2009-10, Planet Sushi is France’s second largest sushi chain with 30 outlets, behind Sushi Shop, with more than 40 outlets and EUR 56 million in turnover last year.

A recent report from French market research firm Gira Conseil found that the 1,580 sushi outlets in France — a small percentage of the 200,000 or so food outlets throughout the country — collectively pulled in EUR 864 million in turnover last year.

The sushi phenomenon is particularly entrenched in the Paris area, with about 66 percent of all sushi outlets located here. Marseille and the Cote d’Azur place second, with 8 percent of all sushi outlets.

According to Planet Sushi, customers can use the iPhone app to find the nearest outlet, and in a few months customers will also be able to order sushi online using the app. In addition, an Android version is set for rollout this year.

Planet Sushi plans to open another 40 restaurants this year, bringing its total to 70 restaurants.
