Gluten-free surimi introduced by Shining Ocean

An imitation crab supplier to United States supermarket chains recently launched its first gluten-free surimi.

Sumner, Washington-based Shining Ocean added Seafarer Treasures, a gluten-free imitation crab product under the company’s Kanimi brand.

Made with wild, sustainable Alaskan pollock and Pacific whiting, Seafarer Treasures is bound with potato starch rather than wheat starch.

“Consumer trending has shown retail customer is looking for healthier, gluten free product,” Lawrence Mulvey, director of business development for Shining Ocean, told SeafoodSource.

Several large U.S. grocers have agreed to carry the product, but it is too early to name the retailers, according to Mulvey.

The  surimi, which has seven grams per serving, is sold refrigerated in eight-ounce packages for a suggested USD 2.99 (EUR 2.54) each. It is also sold in 16-ounce resealable packages for a suggested USD 3.99 (EUR 3.40) each.

Seafarer Treasures is Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified, fat-free, and contains 100 miligrams of Omega-3 fish oil.
