Guolian, Ocean Family score big in JD.com online sale

One of China’s top two online retailers has named a Guolian frozen shrimp products among the best performers in a recent online shopping festival.

Sales of Guolian ‘Fei Cui’ packaged frozen shrimps saw sales jump by more than 3,570 percent on sales in the same “6-18” annual two-week shopping festival on JD.com. The festival is an effort to rival the Alibaba inspired “11-11” or “Singles Day,” and runs for two weeks each June.

A 200-gram packet of Fei Cui shrimp – each packet contains 30 to 40 pieces – retails at CNY 19.90 (USD , EUR ) on JD.com and it topped the list of best performers in the retailers food products during the festival.

There was also good news for Zhejiang-based Da Yang Shi Jia (Ocean Family), which saw sales of its Argentinian red shrimp packaged product rise by 1,305 percent over the same festival period last year. This was the third-highest growth in sales for a food product, behind Guolian, and the second-place product, a packaged, seasoned chicken product made by Charoen Pokphand. The chicken product saw its sales rise by 2,987 percent on the same period last year.

While JD.com doesn’t disclose absolute figures, it appears that more Chinese firms are having success tapping online-savvy younger consumers with convenience-themed products.
