IFFO welcomes its first retail member

Loblaw Cos. Ltd. has become the first retail member of the International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organization, the Canadian retailer announced on Friday. As a result, all of Loblaw’s supplying fish farms will be required to use only IFFO Responsible Supply standard fish meal and fish oil in their feeds.

This is the latest step in Loblaw’s campaign to source 100 percent sustainable seafood by the end of 2013. The commitment extends to the retailer’s control brand products. Last month, it added 50 more items to its portfolio of Marine Stewardship Council-certified seafood, bring the total to 47 products.

Loblaw’s 2012 plans include sourcing products responsibility with a focus on perishables, including seafood, palm oil and animal welfare; continuing to reduce waste within its supply chain; and providing a health and wellness destination for Canadians.

“Responsible fish farming needs responsible feed,” said Andrew Mallison, IFFO director general. “By supporting the IFFO Responsible Supply standard, Loblaw is giving their customers the assurance that the fishmeal and fish oil used as feed ingredients are from well managed fisheries and is produced in safe and well managed factories. We are also delighted to welcome them as our first retail member.”
