NPG Retail Report: salmon

Finfish is the largest category in fresh seafood and during the latest 52 weeks, ending 30 August 2014, it increased dollar sales 6 percent compared to the previous year. Salmon is the largest contributor to finfish sales, accounting for 38.8 percent of dollar sales.

Salmon increased average weekly sales 7.3 percent to USD 1,030 (EUR 807) per store during this period. Salmon was purchased by 15 percent of U.S. households, a decline of 10.3 percent compared to the previous year. These households purchased salmon on 2.9 trips per year. Salmon’s average spend per trip increased 14.4 percent to USD 11.70 (EUR 9.17).

During the latest 52 weeks, salmon sales peaked the week of the Fourth of July holiday (the week ending 5 July 2014) at USD 1,203 (EUR 943) per store. Salmon’s lowest-selling weeks occurred during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The week following Thanksgiving (the week ending November 30, 2013) posted the lowest sales with an average of USD 684 (EUR 536) per store.

Across the U.S regions, salmon experienced positive sales growth. The East region outperformed the other U.S regions averaging USD 1,483 (EUR 1,162) per store per week, an increase of 7.7 percent compared to the previous year. The West region posted the highest contribution to seafood department sales at 19.4 percent. The lowest contributor to salmon sales nationally was the South region at 12.3 percent. However, the South region increased average weekly dollar sales 6.7 percent compared to the previous year.
