SENA15: Vita Foods partners with The Biggest Loser in new salmon, tilapia line

American retail food company Vita Foods has announced a new line of ready-to-cook seafood products featuring The Biggest Loser television show brand.

The company unveiled the new products at Seafood Expo North America, along with past cast members of the show. The new line, which will be available in retail outlets nationwide beginning in May, includes four products, two salmon and two tilapia, each with flavored sauces. They can be prepared in either the microwave or conventional oven, according to Bill Zaikos, VP of marketing for Vita Foods. Zaikos said the decision to reach out the The Biggest Loser was easy.

“One of the biggest parts of The Biggest Loser is healthy eating,” he said. “Obviously seafood should a part of it.”

Danni Allen, winner of season 14 of the show, said she succeeded in her weight loss goals largely by counting calories, and the calorie labeling on the new products particularly appealed to her.

“The calories are right on the package,” she said. “Calories in, calories out. That’s what nutrition is all about.”

For Dan Evans, a runner-up in season five, portion control is the key, and the products help with that, too.

“It’s easy to not overeat when your portions are already set,” he said.

Both cast members said seafood is such a lean and healthy protein that the health-conscious can eat more of it than they can of more fattening proteins such as beef.

“That’s where seafood really hits home for me,” Evans said.

For Allen, seafood is so healthy, she said it makes up 50 percent of her protein diet.

“Seafood allows me to eat a lot more,” she said.
