Study on seafood purchasing in China looks at sustainability

The Perishables Group, SeaFood Business magazine and SeafoodSource.com partner to bring a report of their findings from a survey of 867 seafood consumers from Hong Kong and southern mainland China examining consumer purchase behavior and preferences and attitudes toward seafood sustainability.

The survey examined questions like: which consumers are most knowledgeable about seafood sustainability? Demographically, it’s consumers who are more affluent and are somewhat older, according to the survey. The participating consumers, who are primarily from two regions, Hong Kong and southern mainland China, completed an online questionnaire that gathered information about their shopping behaviors, purchasing preferences and knowledge surrounding seafood.

The study’s results revealed three key takeaways that indicate what fish markets, supermarkets and restaurants can do to ensure that they retain existing customers and gain new ones: maintain freshness and ensure food safety and sustainability.
