Wegmans commits to GAA

The Global Aquaculture Alliance on Tuesday announced that it partnered with East Coast supermarket chain Wegmans to assist the retailer with its farmed seafood sustainability program.

Through its Best Aquaculture Practices program, the GAA will help Wegmans develop guidelines for its farmed seafood program, which will require suppliers to buy product from environmentally responsible sources. The areas of the supply chain to be covered include the processing facility, farm and hatchery.

The Rochester, N.Y.-based retailer anchors its seafood sustainability message with the tagline, “We do it for our grandchildren.”

“At the GAA, our mission is simple. Feed the world through responsible aquaculture,” said Peter Redmond, the organization’s VP of global marketing development. “It is through our partnerships with retailers and supplier around the world that enable us to work towards this mission. We are proud to include Wegmans in that growing list of retailers and foodservice operators.”

Wegmans operates 77 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland. Its first New England store will open in Northborough, Mass., in October.
