Zilli Fish removes bluefin tuna from menu

London celebrity chef Aldo Zilli on Thursday pledged to remove bluefin tuna from the menu at Soho’s Zilli Fish.

Zilli made the call after reading about tuna overfishing in thelondonpaper, a free daily newspaper in London. He then opted  to join the newspaper’s Know the True Price of Fish campaign.

“I have been really motivated to act after reading about the devastating effects of overfishing in thelondonpaper and will be fully supporting Know the True Price of Fish,” said Zilli. “I hope other restaurateurs will follow my lead so that in 50 years, fish will still be on the menu.”

In addition to bluefin tuna, Zilli will also pull from the menu Atlantic cod, swordfish, white skate and Dover sole from the North and Irish Seas.

Instead, the Italian-born chef will offer only Marine Stewardship Council-certified seafood such as Alaska salmon.

Zilli’s move comes a few days after Pret a Manger announced it’s removing tuna and cucumber sandwiches from its 155 U.K. outlets, after founder Julian Metcalfe watched the film “The End of the Line,” which made its theatrical debut on Monday, World Oceans Day. The documentary, based on the 2004 book by Charles Clover, aims to raise awareness of overfishing worldwide.
