The New Jersey Department of Agriculture announced USD 518,000 (EUR 453,250) in grant funding availability aimed at helping nonprofits recover surplus food from farms and seafood producers to redistribute to food-insecure residences.
According to a release from the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, the funding is a part of the Gleaning and Seafood Recovery Support Program.
“The Department of Agriculture is excited to continue the Gleaning Grant Program that supports efforts of organizations rescuing food from our farms and seafood producers,” New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Ed Wengryn said. “These grant monies help programs acquire tools for transportation, washing stations for produce handling, and other needed resources to ensure food that would normally be left on our farms can be collected and donated to our emergency feeding community.”
For the seafood industry, surplus may be directed from fisheries, docks, and markets, and grant funding may cover transportation costs, staff salaries, and miscellaneous expenses. Unallowable costs include freezers, infrastructure improvements, and storage facilities. Eligible applicants must be nonprofit organizations that recover seafood from New Jersey sources. Collected seafood can then be distributed throughout New Jersey to food-insecure recipients.
Applications for grant funding are due by noon EDT on 31 July.
Last year, the program issued grants to nine nonprofits, including Lavallette, New Jersey, U.S.A.-based Americas Gleaned Seafood, which received USD 51,248 (EUR 44,854).
