Ecuadorian, Indian, and Russian seafood exporters have been hit with export bans to China after falling foul of that country’s customs rules on preventing the spread of COVID-19.

Guayaquil, Ecuador-based firm Frigopesca as well as Pedernales, Ecuador-based Camar-Expo were given bans of unspecified lengths by Chinese customs for failing video checks of the companies’ COVID prevention measures at their respective production facilities.

Also given bans of unspecified length were Russia Oktyabrskiy-1 Co. and Kolkata, India-based Rupsha Fish. China Customs said both companies’ COVID-prevention measures were “seriously inconsistent” with advice set out in guidance published by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). A statement from China Customs also suggested that some of the firms had “failed to cooperate” with Chinese authorities to complete video inspections within a specified timeline.

Oktyabrskiy-1 Co. was previously hit with a one-week ban by China in August 2021 for noncompliance with its COVID codes.
