Metro recalls seafood products over salmonella fears

Canadian grocery store chain Metro has recalled a number of own-brand seafood products over fears they may have become contaminated with salmonella.

The recall, issued Saturday, 28 November, includes 21 products in total, including 10 seafood products, distributed in Ontario. The issue appears to be related to a wider recall of salmonella-tainted spinach distributed in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and potentially other Atlantic provinces in Canada.

The seafood products being recalled are two types of Salmon Torenado; two types of Rainbow Trout Stuffed with Vegetable and Cheese; Haddock Vegetable Tournedos; Haddock Vegetable Cheese Tournedos; Cod Vegetable Roast; Cod Vegetable and Cheese Tournedos; and two types of Tilapia Roast Stuffed with Vegetable and Cheese.

The recall, which was issued through the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, affects all units sold up to and including Friday, 27 November, 2020, in all of Metro’s Ontario stores. Also included in the recall are meals including meat and vegetables, a vegetable and grain wrap, and several prepared green juices.

No illnesses have yet been reported in association with any of the products being recalled by Metro, including its spinach products. The company warned that young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections as a result of consuming salmonella. According to the company, healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea, while long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
