A plethora of restaurant chains are touting seafood as the best gift for Mother’s Day as Americans get ready to spend a record USD 28 billion (EUR 23 billion) for the upcoming holiday on Sunday, 9 May.
National Retail Federation (NRF) President and CEO Matthew Shay said economic tailwinds will usher in a windfall for restaurants and seafood suppliers.
“There is a lot of consumer optimism around Mother’s Day this year as more people are getting vaccinated and stimulus checks are being distributed,” Shay said in a press release. “For many, this is a chance to make up for last year’s Mother’s Day when we were under lockdown. With safety guidelines at top of mind, consumers are planning to be with family, are making travel plans and organizing a special brunch or outing.”
NRF found that consumers plan to spend an average of USD 220.48 (EUR 182) each on Mother’s Day items – USD 16.00 (EUR 13.00) more than they planned to spend last year and the highest in the survey's history.
Additionally, 49 percent of consumers surveyed said they are planning a special Mother's Day outing, such as a brunch or other activity.
"This year, demand has been fanatic,” Ocean Prime Vice President Mitch Miller told Nation’s Restaurant News. “It feels as close to a normal Mother’s Day as it could possibly be.”
