Bangladesh: May 2020 shrimp sourcing update

In Bangladesh, the new cultivation season of black tiger shrimp (P. monodon) started in March.

While the last three months were focussed on preparing ponds, farming already started from the end of March. Contrary to black tiger shrimp, freshwater prawn (M. rosenbergii) ended its cultivation period in January. This means that in February both species were relatively scarce, which was reflected in their farm gate prices.

While the season was not yet in full progress, Bangladesh already experienced the first effects of COVID-19 as some E.U. buyers canceled their orders.
