Iceland’s FISK Seafood expands operations into longlining

FISK Seafood, a fishing and processing company based in Sauðárkrókur, Iceland, has reached an agreement to purchase Ölduós ehf and its 11-meter longline vessel Dögg SU 118.

The purchase of Hornafjörður-based Ölduós is now subject to approval from Iceland's Competition Authority.

Through the acquisition and Dögg’s 700 metric tons (MT) cod quota, FISK Seafood will increase its total quota for the whitefish by almost 5 percent, according to a company statement. It is estimated that the additional catch would correspond to two to three weeks of FISK’s land processing capacity at Sauðárkrókur and Snæfellsnes.

“With this business, FISK Seafood is moving into small boat fishing on a line and if successful, we will continue to build in that field," FISK Seafood Managing Director Fridbjörn Ásbjörnsson said. "The seasonal boats would be a welcome addition to the increased life that the harbor here in Sauðárkrókur has gained in recent years and this first step with the purchase of Dögg will immediately be a great strengthening for the land processing development and the value it is creating every day."
