Continuing a trend, less shrimp was imported to the US in November 2022

The United States continued a downward trend of importing less shrimp in November 2022 than the same period a year prior.

The U.S. imported a total of 140 million pounds, or 63,715 metric tons (MT), of shrimp in November 2022, down from 174 million pounds, or 78,749 MT, it imported in November 2021.

India remained the top source of shrimp for the U.S., accounting for 47 million pounds, or 21,416 MT, of U.S. imports in the month, down from its previous total of 65 million pounds, or 29,570 MT, it sent in November 2021.

Indonesia sent 30 million pounds, or 13,595 MT, of shrimp to the U.S. in November, ranking it second in total exports to the U.S. Its total was down from 31 million pounds, or 14,094 MT, in November 2021.

Ecuador ranked third, and increased its year-over-year exports in November 2022, sending 33 million pounds, or 14,885 MT, up from 31 million pounds, or 14,094 MT, in November 2021.

Vietnam exported 12 million pounds, or 5,433 MT, of shrimp to the U.S. in November 2022, down from 17 million pounds, or 7,544 MT, the country exported to the U.S. November 2021.

Thailand sent 7 million pounds, or 3,065 MT, in November 2022, down from 10 million pounds, or 4,579 MT, in November 2021.

Mexico sent 6 million pounds, or 2,547 MT, in November 2022 – also a drop from its total exports of 9 million pounds, 4,174 MT, in November 2021.

Argentina also saw a decrease. The country exported 2 million pounds, or 1,098 MT, of shrimp to the U.S. in November 2022, a decrease from 4 million pounds, or 1,944 MT sent in November 2021.

The remaining countries in the top 10 in terms of shrimp exports to the U.S. in November 2022 were Peru, exporting 460,000 pounds, or 207 MT; China with 500,00 pounds, or 229 MT; and the Philippines sending 210,000 pounds, or 97 MT.
