Decline in US shrimp imports continued in October 2022

The United States continued to import less shrimp year-over-year in October 2022, a trend that has been ongoing through most of the year.

The U.S. imported a total of 69,403 metric tons (MT) or 153 million pounds, down from 85,306 MT, or 188.1 million pounds, in October 2021.

India accounted for 60.1 million pounds (27,261 MT) of U.S. imports in the month, down from the 80.9 million pounds (36,718 MT) it sent in October 2021.

Ecuador increased its exports in October 2022, sending 34.1 million pounds (15,487 MT), up from 28.4 million pounds (12,655 MT) in October 2021.

Indonesia's exports also dropped in October 2022 to 28.4 million pounds (12,889 MT), down from 37.2 million pounds (16,851 MT) in October 2021.

Vietnam sent 11 million pounds (5,004 MT) in October 2022, less than the 18.3 million pounds (8,325 MT) it exported to the U.S. October 2021.

Thailand sent 7.4 million pounds (3,390 MT) in October 2022, down from 9.1 million pounds (4,160 MT) in October 2021.

Mexico's total was basically flat, sending 5.3 million pounds (2,421 MT) in October 2022 versus 5.1 million pounds (2,295 MT) in October 2021.

Argentina sent 3.4 million pounds (1,547 MT) in October 2022, down from 4.4 million pounds (2,005 MT) in October 2021.

The remaining spots in the top 10 shrimp-exporting nations to the U.S. in October 2022 were Peru, sending 498,000 pounds (226 MT); Honduras at 363,000 pounds (165 MT); and Saudi Arabia with 348,000 pounds (158 MT).
