Seafood software developer Maritech has opened an office in Puerto Montt, Chile, a global hub of Atlantic salmon farming.
The company, which also operates satellite offices in North American, Iceland, and Spain, in addition to its headquarters in Averøy, Norway and other Norwegian offices in Molde, Harstad, Oslo, and Tromsø.
Maritech, which provides traceability and business software, as well as a seafood trading platform designed for fish farmers, processors, and traders, has hired system architect Francisco Arellano as its first employee in Chile. In a press release, the company said it hopes to extend its presence in the Chilean aquaculture industry and beyond.
“Maritech’s strategy is to extend the functionality of its software solutions to cover more of the seafood value chain and expand geographically,” it said. “The opening of the office in Chile is an important step towards the aim to be the most widespread solution in the international market.”
Earlier this week, Iceland’s Sea Data Center, which represents Maritech in Iceland, said it had signed a contract with Niceland Seafood, an Icelandic seafood company focused on selling into the U.S. market. Niceland, founded in 2018 by former Disney executive Oliver Luckett, has bet big on American consumers’ interest in “sea-to-pan” traceability. In 2019, the company has expanded its distribution throughout the U.S. and now supplies a variety of seafood to distributors including Seattle Fish, Fortune Fish, Halperns’ Steak and Seafood, Metcalfe’s Markets, and Busch’s Markets, among others.
Anna Björk Theodorsdottir, the managing director of Sea Data Center, said with Niceland’s implementation of Maritech´s DigitalSeafood Purchase and Sales solution, the company will have access to enhanced traceability solutions and business-data analytics dashboards covering the company’s entire value chain.
“With the software solutions, Niceland Seafood is getting an even better and more accurate overview of the traceability of their products as well as giving them full control and insight of their business operations” Theodorsdottir said. “The solution we are now offering is a comprehensive package and covers the entire value chain from sea to the table with full traceability.”
Niceland will also gain access to the Sea Data Center’s seafood market information platform, which provides seafood market data and analysis, including pricing information.
“Our goal is to help our clients by optimizing and automizing processes as well as to get more value from their own data including external market data,” Theodorsdottir said. “We are able to do that as we are collecting data from the whole operational value chain, analyzing it, and turning it into actionable insights with real-time information on our customers businesses.”
