Vietnam’s tuna exports jumped in April 2022, led by a surge in demand from the United States.
Vietnam saw a 46 percent year-on-year increase in its tuna exports to USD 108 million (EUR 100 million) in April. Between January and April 2022, Vietnam exported USD 368 million (EUR 342 million) worth of tuna, up 63 percent year-on-year. Tuna is the third-largest contributor to Vietnam’s total seafood export value, after shrimp and pangasius.
Vietnam doubled its tuna sales to the U.S. in April, hitting USD 64 million (EUR 59.5 million) in sales. Through April 2022, Vietnam grew its U.S. tuna exports 112 percent year-on-year to USD 201 million (EUR 186.8 million).
Vietnam’s sales to countries belonging to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) grew 35 percent year-on-year in April, to USD 11.5 million (EUR 10.7 million); and 39 percent between January and April, reaching USD 42 million (EUR 39 million). The CPTPP includes Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, Mexico, Vietnam, Peru, Chile, Brunei, and Malaysia.
Vietnam’s tuna sales to the E.U. declined 18 percent year-on-year to USD 15 million (EUR 13.9 million) in April after consecutive growth in each of the first three months of 2022. Vietnam’s exports to Germany tumbled 48 percent while sales to the Netherlands and Spain rose 81 percent and 111 percent year-on-year, respectively. Through the first four months of 2022, Vietnam’s E.U. tuna sales totaled USD 53 million (EUR 49.3 million), up 13 percent from a year ago.
VASEP said the growth of Vietnam's tuna exports will continue, though the industry is facing an increase in material tuna prices and operating costs due to inflation.
