Plymouth, Minnesota, U.S.A.-based medical manufacturing company Chitogen Inc. has signed a letter of intent with Balaton, Minnesota-based Trū Shrimp to purchase commercial quantities of chitosan produced from the ground-up exoskeletons of its farm-raised shrimp.

Tru Shrimp President and CEO Michael Ziebell told SeafoodSource in October 2022 his company's entrance into the chitosan market represents an important growth avenue for the start-up, which operates a pilot facility in Minnesota and which is seeking to build a large-scale land-based shrimp farm in the U.S. state of South DakotaIn August 2022, Tru Shrimp announced it had commenced production of a branded line of premium chitosan for topical and internal medical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic applications.

Trū Chitosan supply will be using the Chigoten patented and proprietary SoftSeal interventional hemostat production line, Chitogen President Albert Emola said.

"This is truly a great development for Chitogen," Emola said. "Trū Chitosan is made in the U.S. in an FDA facility to exact USP [United States pharmacopeia] monograph specifications. Their extraordinary, documented chain of custody will enable Chitogen to market our SoftSeal interventional hemostats into the very demanding regulatory environment of the European Union. This is a strategic priority for Chitogen."
