US makes large catfish purchase

Soon after awarding Trident Seafoods with a large wild salmon contract, the United States Department of Agriculture said it will buy more than USD 500,000 (EUR 451,000) worth of catfish from one U.S. supplier.

Consolidated Catfish Companies of Isola, Mississippi, was awarded the contract for 200,000 pounds of breaded catfish strips, worth USD 504,000 (EUR 454,540). The catfish, for child nutrition and other domestic food programs, will be delivered between January 2020 and April 2020.

Last fall, the USDA said it would be purchasing nearly USD 20 million (EUR 17 million) in catfish products as part of its Section 32 “Bonus Buys” authority.

The USDA said the purchases would “encourage the continued domestic consumption of these products by diverting them from the normal channels of trade and commerce,” according to a press release.
