US government completes big wild salmon buy, seeks more pollock
The United States government continues to support Alaska’s wild fisheries with a USD 3.1 million (EUR 2.8 million) purchase of wild salmon and a bid for nearly 400,000 pounds of Alaska pollock.
The United States Department of Agriculture awarded its most recent wild salmon contract to Trident Seafoods, for federal child nutrition and other domestic food assistance programs.
Trident will supply 324,000 pounds of frozen wild salmon fillets, worth nearly USD 3.1 million. The supplier will deliver the salmon between October 2019 and March 2020.
Meanwhile, the USDA is seeking 391,200 pounds of frozen breaded Alaska Pollock fish sticks for the National School Lunch Program and other federal nutrition programs.
The agency had already purchased a record amount of pollock five months into this year. The large pollock buys are intended to offset the effects of the U.S.-China trade war.
Bids for the new pollock contract are due by 3 September.
