An My Fish Joint Stock Company, a pangasius company from Mekong Delta in Vietnam, has seen China as its key market and is shipping more than double the amount to the neighboring country.
The company exports its high-quality products to China through official channels with about 15 to 20 containers per month currently, more than double the seven to eight containers it sent last year, a sales executive with the company told SeafoodSource during seafood expo Vietfish 2019, which took place from 29 to 31 August in Ho Chi Minh City. Each container is about 20 metric tons (MT).
“Many people are surprised by the purchasing power of China, especially for products of higher prices. They have huge demand of high-quality products,” the executive said.
Beside higher demand, the official also attributed the increase to the trade war between China and the United States. He suspected that some seafood products from the U.S. could no longer competitively enter China due to the tariffs, making way for high-quality pangasius from Vietnam.
An My exports an average of 60 containers per month, mainly to China, but it also ships to other countries in Southeast Asia region, Japan, South Korea, Europe, and the Middle East, according to the official.
The company’s farming capacity has been raised to meet rising demand for exports, he added.
An My, based in An Giang Province, has processing capacity of 60,000 MT per year. It has two cold storage systems with total capacity of 7,000 MT. It also has its own farming area of 70 hectares in An Giang, which supplies material for the processing plant, according to An My’s website.
