Trident Aqua Services adds two hybrid vessels; Tidal launches autonomous sea lice control

Trident Aqua Services, a provider of maritime services to aquaculture operations in Norway, Chile, the U.K., Ireland, Canada, and the Faroe Islands, has contracted two new hybrid vessels as it expands its fleet.

The company said it has commissioned a new live fish carrier from the Zamakona shipyard in Bilbao, Spain. According to the company, the new vessel will have a capacity of 4,000 cubic meters and will have a hybrid propulsion system. 

“This investment represents not only a significant capacity increase but also a strengthening of our ability to deliver the very best services to current and future customers worldwide,” Trident Aqua Services CEO Arild Aasmyr said.

The company has also commissioned a new premium service vessel from the Sletta shipyard in Norway. The 27-meter vessel is designed for “complex service operations in the aquaculture industry,” will use a hybrid drive system, and will be equipped with a 1,570 kWh battery pack. The vessel will be the 17th built for Trident Aqua Services by Sletta. 

“We greatly appreciate the trust placed in us and look forward to delivering yet another vessel that both we and Trident Aqua Services can be proud of,” Sletta Ship Yard Managing Director Kåre Sletta said in a release.

With the commissioning of the two new vessels, Trident Aqua Servies now has seven vessels under construction, the company said.

Tidal, the aquaculture spinoff from Google X, the moonshot factory, has launched “Tidal Lice Control,” an AI-powered system designed to detect and neutralize sea lice.

Tidal launched as an independent company in 2024 and has since debuted cameras and AI systems providing real-time intelligence on salmon farms. The company said its latest product adds the ability to autonomously control sea lice populations inside net pens.

“We built Lice Control with the same mindset we had at Google X – applying AI and robotics to real-world, high-impact problems,” Tidal Norway General Manager Anders Fossøy said. “Farmers can now protect fish without chemicals, stress, or downtime, which means healthier fish and lower costs.”

Tidal said its system monitors net pens 24 hours a day and, when it detects sea lice on fish, can deliver targeted energy to deconstruct the lice without harming the salmon. The solution can be integrated into Tidal’s existing products.

“Leveraging the early investments in core technology from our autonomous feeding solution – closed-loop control, spatial positioning, and precise computer vision – Tidal’s Lice Control is a natural evolution,” Tidal Senior Sales Executive Kristine Langaunet said. “By building Lice Control into the same system farmers already use for feeding and monitoring, we reduce the amount of equipment needed in the pen.”
