Hixton, Wisconsin, U.S.A.-based salmon-farming company Superior Fresh has conducted its first commercial salmon harvest from its Albany, Indiana-based recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facility.
Superior Fresh purchased the Indiana facility in July 2024 from AquaBounty Technologies for USD 9.5 million (EUR 8.2 million) after the latter company hit financial difficulties and elected to sell it to finance its ill-fated Pioneer, Ohio-based RAS.
After acquiring the facility, Superior Fresh made several improvements to its systems and, in June, said it was nearing its first harvest.
At the time, Superior Fresh CEO and Co-Founder Brandon Gottsacker told SeafoodSource the company was seeing some of the “strongest biological performance in our company's history.”
Now, the company announced it has officially achieved its first harvest, which it called “the first step in bringing our Indiana farm to life.”
“What makes me most proud isn’t just the speed of the transformation; it’s the people behind it,” Gottsacker said on his LinkedIn. “From engineering and construction to operations, maintenance, fish care, quality, finance, HR, and every supporting function, this has been a true team effort. The level of commitment, resilience, and belief in what we’re building has been nothing short of inspiring.”
The harvest was intentionally scheduled to take place roughly eight years after its first harvest in Wisconsin and 10 years after the company was founded.
“We still have a long way to go, but it’s important to pause and recognize moments like this. They remind us what’s possible when talented people rally around a common mission,” Gottsacker said. “Incredible team. Incredible product. Incredible future.”
