Bangladeshi black tiger exporters in dire straits

The country’s shrimp exporters are in dire straits due to fall in price in the international market especially in European Union, sources said.

“The price of one pound black tiger shrimp is now maximum $4.60. It was sold $5.50 to $6 one month back. The price of one pound black tiger contains 16 to 20 pieces,” Lockpur Group senior executive director Khan Habibur Rahman told the FE.

Already, some 10 to 12 foreign buyers told us for renegotiation of their consignments. And after the re-fixation of black tiger price, we have to count a big amount of loss," Rahman said.

“More than 80 per cent of the total shrimp exports go to the EU. To reduce dependency on one market we have to look for new markets and the government has to come forward to save the industry,” he said.
