Bumble Bee closes Puerto Rico facility

Bumble Bee Foods LLC is pulling the plug on its Puerto Rico plant as the island’s once-mighty tuna packing industry runs dry.

Company officials were at the cannery on Mayagüez on Tuesday to inform some 180 employees of the closure, which is scheduled for June. The plant has been in operation since the early 1960s.

Senior Vice President for Operations Jan Tharp confirmed the closure.
