Canada fisheries minister Hunter Tootoo resigns

Canada’s minister of fisheries, oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard has resigned from his position and from the Liberal party caucus in order to seek treatment for addiction issues.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Tootoo’s departure in an announcement on Tuesday, 31 May. Trudeau named Tootoo after Trudeau led the Liberal party to a federal election victory six months ago. He previously served as a member of the Canadian Parliament representing Nunavut in northern Canada.

Dominic LeBlanc, a Member of Parliament representing Beauséjour in New Brunswick and the leader of Canada’s House of Commons, will assume Tootoo’s cabinet responsibilities, according to the announcement.
