Canadian shellfish firm plans multi-million dollar expansion

Hard hit after losing half of its sales in 2008 due to the recession, Taylor Cultured Seafood Inc. is bouncing back with a multimillion-dollar expansion plan that will nearly triple the size of its oyster and bay scallop harvesting site.

Rodman Taylor, the company's 59-year-old owner, is proposing with the town's approval to expand the size of his harvesting site in Nasketucket Bay from 35 to 101 acres; construct his own shellfish hatchery on Goulart Memorial Drive for oysters, scallops and quahogs; and add between 14 and 19 new employees to the payroll.

The harvesting area is located north of West Island, and the company currently uses a hatchery in Maine to grow its bay scallops and oysters, he said.
