Chinese fisheries a dangerous place to work

China’s fishing fleet is a dangerous place to work, according to data from the fishing sector published recently by the country’s Ministry of Agriculture.

China’s fishing fleet recorded at least 165 fatalities due to accidents in 2016, according to an annual tranche of data released by the ministry. The death count remains high despite government campaigns in recent years stressing the country’s efforts to reduce fatalities in the sector.

Meanwhile 1.06 million hectares of aquaculture space was lost to disasters, along with 1,987 vessels. Economic losses are estimated at CNY 2.87 billion (USD 430.9 million, EUR 365 million).
