Damanaki to discuss Russia with EU members

European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Maria Damanaki will discuss the impact of the Russian trade ban with European fisheries ministers at an upcoming meeting in Luxembourg.

Damanaki will take stock of the consequences of the ban at the 13 October meeting and discuss what support measures the sector needs.

Russia issued the ban earlier this year on products from Western countries including Canada, the United States, Australia, Norway and the EU.

The move has caused turmoil among seafood exporters, including Norway, which exported 100,000 metric tons of salmon to Russia in the past year alone. Damanaki issued a statement this month pledging support for EU fisheries.

In 2013, the commission estimated the total export value of banned EU fisheries products at close to EUR 144 million (USD 185.1 million), which represents 2 percent of the total value of the EU's fish and aquaculture annual product.
