The European Union is threatening to ban tuna imports from Papua New Guinea because it is failing to ensure the sustainability of tuna fishing in its waters.
The EU has issued what it calls a “yellow card” to PNG and says it is reluctant to take step two and ban the tuna trade with PNG.
At a news conference in Brussels the EU Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Maria Damanaki said talks over more than two years had failed to produce the desired result of ensuring the sustainability of the tuna industry in PNG waters.
