Former Marel exec takes over as Icelandic CEO

Icelandic Group has hired Larus Asgeirsson as CEO, the company announced on Wednesday.

Asgeirsson comes to Icelandic from insurance company Sjova Almennar, were he served as CEO from 2009 to 2011. Previously, he served as a member of the management board at Marel Food Systems, corporate director of sales and marketing at Marel subsidiary Scanvaegt International in Denmark, and director of sales and marketing at Marel Iceland.

Asgeirsson takes over for Chairman Brynjolfur Bjarnason, who had been serving as interim CEO since February when Finnbogi Baldvinsson and three other executives abruptly resigned over the direction of the company.

“We are extremely pleased to have Larus join our ranks. His long and extensive experience of international business operations will be very valuable for the company going forward,” said Icelandic Chairman Heris Fjeldsted. “Icelandic Group has undergone major changes in recent months, with greater emphasis on streamlining operations, lowering debts and increasing profitability. It is therefore an exciting challenge that awaits the company’s new CEO — to lead the strong group of managers and employees of Icelandic Group.”

“It is very exciting to take on the leadership role at Icelandic Group,” said Asgeirsson. “The company holds a very solid market position in the international seafood industry. I look forward to working with the executive team and staff of Icelandic Group to build on the strong foundations of the company.”
