In order to protect Atlantic herring and prevent the total allowable catch from being harvested before the market peaks, New Hampshire Fish and Game's Marine Fisheries Division on Friday prohibited commercial harvesters from landing Atlantic herring in the western half of the Gulf of Maine in September.
Harvesting will be prohibited from 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 3 through midnight Sept. 14 and 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 17 through midnight on Sept. 28.
Atlantic States Marine Fisherwies Commission Herring Section members from Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts will meet Sept. 24 to determine if additional days will be needed to extend the available quota for herring into October and November.
