Vietnam’s seafood production achieved a total value of VND 35.4 trillion (USD 1.6 billion, EUR 1.4 billion) in the first-quarter of this year, an increase of 2.3 percent year-on-year, with higher sales recorded in both the wild-capture and aquaculture sectors, according to the Vietnam Directorate of Fisheries.
The Southeast Asian country’s capture fisheries achieved a value of VND 18.4 trillion (USD 821.3 million, EUR 723 million), while the contribution from fish farming totaled VND 17 trillion (USD 758.9 million, EUR 668 million), representing increases of 3.8 percent and 0.9 percent, respectively.
In volume terms, total capture production reached 722,100 metric tons (MT), up 3.7 percent compared with Q1 2015. The total included a marine catch of 683,000 MT, an increase of four percent year-on-year.
Total aquaculture volumes for the period have not been finalized, but in the first two months of the year grew 2.3 percent to 351,000 MT.
According to Vietnam Customs, the value of seafood exports for the year through 15 March were estimated at nearly USD 1.2 billion (EUR 1.1 billion), an increase of 9.5 percent year-on-year.
