Indian seafood exports pass 1 million MT

Seafood exports from India crossed 1 million metric tons (MT) for the first time and the earnings crossed USD 4.5 billion (EUR 3.3 billion) during 2013-14, according to provisional estimates of the Marine Products Export Development Authority [MPEDA].

An increase of USD 1 billion (EUR 728.4 million) was recorded in just 12 months as exports were USD 3.5 billion (EUR 2.5 billion) during 2011-12 and 2012-13, a 30 percent rise.

In Rupee terms, the estimates indicate earnings of INR 20,000 (USD 332, EUR 242). In 2012-13 India exported 928,215 MT of seafood, valued at INR 18,856 (USD 313, EUR 228) and in 2011-12 these were 862,021 MT and INR 16,597 (USD 275, EUR 200) respectively.

MPEDA now targets earnings of USD 10 billion (EUR 7.3 billion) by 2020.
