Is giant squid the next big Pacific market?

The Secretariat of the Pacific Community is researching the potential of tapping into the giant and flying squid fishing industry.

The SPC is running fishing trials in Fiji waters on two species of giant squid to determine the best grounds and practice for sustainable fishing.

The two species being researched are the diamond back squid and the neon flying squid.

The diamondback squid can grow up to 1.1m long and weighs between 16 and 25kg, while the neon flying squid grows up to 60cm and can weigh between 5 and 13kg.
